What is Barbed Wire, and What Are its Uses?

Barbed wire, also known as barbwire, is a type of fencing wire that is equipped with sharp barbs or points. These barbs are designed to deter animals and people from crossing the fence line. Barbed wire fences are commonly used on farms and ranches to keep livestock contained. They can also be used around commercial properties, industrial sites, and residences.

The barbs makes it obviously different from the usual chain link fences with woven wire and square cross design. Barbed wire are known for their sharp projections that creates that secure vibe. The regularly spaced sharp projections sends the message “get out” compared to the square cross section of chain link fences that is more subtle.

Manufacturing Barbed Wire Fencing Wires

How are barbed wires manufactured? The raw material for manufacturing barbed wire includes iron ore and coke, a type of carbon-rich substance produced at a high temperature in the absence of air and limestone.

A blast furnace uses hot pressurised air to heat iron ore, coke, and limestone. The coke generates heat (to melt the iron ore) as well as carbon monoxide (which reacts with iron oxides in the ore to produce iron).

Pig iron is the end product of the blast furnace and has at least 90% iron content and 3-5% carbon.

The impurities and the majority of the carbon must be eliminated in order to convert pig iron into steel. (Iron without carbon is far more fragile than steel, but iron with too much carbon is brittle.) The basic oxygen steel (BOS) method is one of the most frequent ways to purify pig iron.

In this approach, oxygen is blasted into molten pig iron under high pressure, causing carbon monoxide to be generated and impurities to be released as slag. The undesirable substances are released as slag while the good ones are extracted in the form of carbon dioxide. Thousands of pounds of molten steel are poured into molds and allowed to solidify into the desired shape.

Pig iron is also an ingredient in the production of gray iron, which is used to make engine blocks and other castings. In this process, pig iron is combined with scrap iron and limestone, and the resulting mixture is heated in a furnace until it becomes liquid. The molten mixture is then poured into molds where it solidifies into the desired shape. Gray iron has a lower carbon content than pig iron, so it is more malleable and less brittle.

The material produced are then formed into square cross sections called billet. To create the wires, the billet is continuously heated and rolled up in grooved rolls until it is formed into 0.2 inches wire rods. These rods are then rolled into a coil to be coated with lime, borax, or phosphate.

All of the operations required to convert galvanised wire into barbed wire are carried out by one automatic machine. Two wires are fed into the machine and combined together to make the cable. Another wire is inserted from the side and twisted around one or both of the cable’s wires. A two-point barb is formed by cutting this wire at an angle on both sides.

If four-point barbs are required, two wires are twisted and joined together. The barbed wire is dragged along a set distance (usually 4 or 5 inches [10 or 13 cm]), and the process is repeated to space the barbs evenly. Barbed wire is wound onto spools and cut into 1,319-foot (402 m) lengths before being loaded onto trucks and sent to the customer.

A surface coating of zinc is applied to prevent rusting. Occasionally, cable wires that are twisted to create barbs are coated with aluminium. In some applications, the wire used to create the barbed wire is made of aluminium. Two wires are then twisted into each other to achieve the barbed spacing and barbed look that these fencing material is known for.

Types of Barbed Wires

There are two types of barbed wire: single-strand and double-strand. Single-strand barbed wire is typically used for light duty applications such as temporary fencing or as a secondary fence line. Double-strand barbed wire is stronger and more durable, making it ideal for heavy-duty applications such as perimeter security fencing.

Barbed wire is made from steel wire that is coated with zinc or another type of metal. The barbs are usually made from molten steel or iron and are sharpened to a point. Barbed wire fences can be equipped with either wood or metal posts and secured with barbed tapes, screws and nails.

There are many different uses for barbed wire. In addition to providing security for property, barbed wire can be used for the following purposes:

  • Containment of livestock
  • Prevention of trespassing
  • Boundary fencing
  • Division fencing
  • Perimeter fencing wires

Different Types of Barbed Wire Fencing Available

There are many different types of barbed wire fencing available on the market. The type of barbed wire fence you choose will depend on your specific needs and budget. From crimped wire mesh to galvanised barbed wire, to simple wire rods, there are plenty of options one can pick from. Some of the most popular types of barbed wire fences include:

Single Strand Barbed Wire Fence

This type of barbed wire fence is the most economical option. It is made from a single strand of barbed wire. almost like a wire rod that is attached to wooden or metal posts. Single strand barbed wire fences are typically used for temporary fencing or as a secondary fence line.

Double Strand Barbed Wire Fence

This type of barbed wire fence is stronger and more durable than a single strand fence. It is made from two strands of barbed wire that are twisted together. Double strand barbed wire fences are typically used for perimeter security fencing.

Razor Wire Fence

This type of barbed wire fence is made from multiple strands of barbed wire that are twisted together. Razor wire fences are very sharp and can cause serious injury. They are typically used in high security applications such as military bases and prisons.

Electric Fence

This type of barbed wire fence is equipped with an electric current. The electric current deters animals and people from crossing the fence line. Electric fences are commonly used on farms and ranches to keep livestock contained.
