The Sydney Steel Cheat sheet: Weld Mesh vs. Concrete Reo (And What to Actually Ask For)

Instead of a confusing code, you usually order this by its physical dimensions and the size of the square holes. Part 2: Concrete Reinforcement Mesh (The “Slab” Mesh) Now, if you are pouring a driveway in Blacktown or laying the foundations for a home renovation in the Inner West, you do not want galvanised mesh. You want structural reinforcement. In the trade, this gets called Steel Mesh, Concrete Mesh, Reinforcement Steel Mesh, or simply Reo Mesh. This stuff isn’t built to look pretty; its raw steel designed to sit completely inside your concrete pour to give it tensile strength and stop it from cracking as the ground shifts. The Codes to Know: Instead of hole sizes, Reo is ordered by standard Australian trade codes. The two most common sheets you will need for standard slabs are: SL72 Mesh: Great for driveways, footpaths, and standard garden sheds. Know your environment: If it’s outdoors or exposed to Sydney’s coastal air, make sure you ask for galvanised or coated finishes. Get it delivered: Large sheets of SL72 or heavy 2.4m x 6m gal weld mesh isn’t going to fit on the back of a standard ute safely.
